MOORHEAD — Pam Gohl has been named deputy athletic director at Minnesota State Moorhead, athletic director Chad Markuson announced Tuesday, Aug. 1.

“Throughout the search process, Pam just kept rising to the top in all the categories," Markuson said.

Gohl spent the previous 11 years at the University of Sioux Falls where she served as athletic director the past six years.

“I know some people would be like ‘Why would you do something like that?’ " Gohl said of moving from an AD position to deputy AD. "I believe I’m a lifelong learner. I haven’t been on a public school campus as an administrator yet. I look forward to hearing how they’ve done things at Moorhead and I also think it’s neat to bring other things to the table. ... Executive leadership, I’m not so hung up on the title. I think that Chad and I together can work really well to help lead the athletic department."

Prior to athletic administration, Gohl had a successful basketball coaching career. She guided Minnesota State Mankato women's program to its first NCAA Division II national championship in 2008-2009.

“She’s been on the other side of the athletic department in a coaching role and was very successful in a coaching role," Markuson said. “I was looking for a person who has knowledge and/or experience in all the different areas that make an athletic department run. Pam is one who can take the ball and run with anything."

Gohl said working with Tim Downs — who recently started as MSU Moorhead's president — was also appealing. Downs was previously the president at Northern State, which is also in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

“He’s an impactful and impressive leader," Gohl said.

Gohl was a head coach from 2008-2012 for the Mavericks. She was an assistant coach at Fort Hays State (Kan.) from 2001-2003 and head coach at Briar Cliff (Iowa) from 2003-2006. She was the MSU Mankato assistant coach from 2006-2008 before taking over as head coach.

Gohl started her coaching career as a graduate assistant at St. Cloud State from 1999-2001. From Manning, Iowa, Gohl played women's basketball at Augustana University in Sioux Falls.

“It was a good natural fit and I’m excited to have her join us," Markuson said.
