With students, parents and alumni preparing for the return of football season, the Centre Daily Times asked which local high school has the best marching band — and the community answered.

Philipsburg Osceola School District won with 38% (19,036) of the 50,015 votes cast at www.CentreDaily.com. Penns Valley Area came in second with 20% of the votes in our non-scientific poll that ran from July 26-31.

The Philipsburg Osceola marching band, led by Amanda Woods, has kept busy during their summer break, playing six different fairs across the central Pennsylvania region, including the Clearfield County Fair on Monday night.

Woods attributes the polls results to the competitive P-O spirit and the community’s dedication to its school district.

“Our kids act as ambassadors to the community all summer long by marching in parades,” Woods said. “And I know our community sees that and our community is really, really proud of that. So this just shows the awesome community support we have over here.”

Currently, the band is working on this fall’s field show, a 1950s sock hop-inspired set. Woods said it will be hard work to follow the band’s theme last year, a decades-inspired performance with a full “Thriller” dance, but they are up to the challenge.

Woods said this fall will be the first year the marching band is back to pre-COVID levels of student participation, with more than 50 students preparing for the coming season. But Woods can’t run the band alone — she’s helped by band front directors Heather Miller and Holly Henry as well as drumline coach John Surkovic.

“We’ve got local staff, we’ve got a very active booster organization and we’ve got a really supportive school district too,” Woods said. “I know not every school can say that but we’ve got a really supportive school district and that goes a long way.”
